The chill of winter beckons, and as you venture out to brave the elements, the right footwear becomes your trusted ally. From snowy trails to city streets, the choice between waterproof and water resistant boots plays a pivotal role in your journey. But, here lies the crux: while these terms often get interchanged, they serve distinct purposes, each with its own set of advantages. Delve into this guide as we demystify the differences, ensuring your next step is both dry and informed.

Whether you’re hiking through snow-covered forests or trudging through recently-plowed city streets, nobody wants their feet to get wet. But you know better than anyone that it’s impossible to avoid moisture for an entire Canadian winter, which is why you need waterproof boots. But not all snow & winter boots are waterproof, and the wrong pair will leave you unhappy at the wrong time.
Simply assuming that any pair of boots is waterproof can be a major mistake. In this guide, we’re looking at potential risks of taking “waterproof” claims at face value and delving into how to tell if boots are waterproof.
Waterproof boots are engineered to be impenetrable to water under specific conditions. These boots feature advanced materials, specialized construction techniques, and often use waterproof membranes like Gore-Tex. Waterproof boots can withstand prolonged exposure to wet environments and should be your first choice in especially rainy, snowy, or muddy conditions.
Conversely, water-resistant boots, while offering a certain level of protection against moisture, are not fully impervious to water. These boots have been treated with a durable water repellent (DWR) coating materials that resist water to a degree, like light or moderate rain, but they're not designed for sustained exposure to wet conditions.
To accurately assess if a pair of boots is waterproof, it's important to familiarize yourself with some commonly-used waterproofing technologies.
Understanding these waterproofing technologies will allow you to make an informed decision when shopping for boots. In most cases, manufacturers will label their products that use these technologies, making it easier for you to identify and choose the right pair for your needs.
Armed with the knowledge of the differences between waterproof and water-resistant boots and common waterproofing technologies, we can now identify some practical methods for determining if a pair of boots can actually stand up in truly wet conditions.
Check the Label
Begin your assessment by examining the label or product description provided by the manufacturer for any symbols or terms indicating waterproofing. These labels often identify the specific waterproofing technologies or materials used, and can provide insight into a boot's water-resistant capabilities.
Examine the Seams
The seams of waterproof boots are vitally important. The first thing to remember is that quality waterproof boots typically have few seams. A lot of stitching or several seams on the upper increase the chances of water finding its way in. Conversely, a well-made pair of waterproof boots will feature sealed or taped seams that prevent water from entering.
Another key factor in determining the quality of waterproof boots is the material used in their construction. This is generally either leather or a synthetic material.
Leather
Thanks to its natural ability to repel water, full-grain leather is a popular choice for waterproof boots. If a pair of boots is made of full-grain leather, it is more likely to be waterproof. It is worth noting, however, that this waterproofing often comes at the cost of a bit of breathability.
Synthetic Materials
Meanwhile, some waterproof boots utilize synthetic materials, like nylon, often combined with waterproof membranes, like Gore-Tex. These materials offer both excellent warmth and water resistance while also remaining breathable.
Weight and Cost
Generally, waterproof boots weigh slightly more than their non-waterproof counterparts. This is due to the additional waterproofing materials used in their construction. Additionally, the fact that high-quality waterproofing materials come at a premium price will be reflected in the price of waterproof boots.
In examining the specific waterproof features of a pair of boots, start with the boot's tongue. Waterproof boots will feature a gusseted tongue, which attaches to the sides of the boot's upper. This design prevents water from entering through the lacing area. Also important are waterproof zippers or protective flaps, which help keep water out and ensure dryness and comfort in cold, wet environments.
The Paper Towel Test
This test is one of the easiest ways to tell if your boots are indeed waterproof. To perform the paper towel test, wet the boot's exterior thoroughly, then press a dry paper towel against the wet surface. If your boots are waterproof, the paper towel should remain dry. Any dampness on the paper towel is a sign that water has penetrated the outer material, suggesting the boots are not entirely waterproof.
The Submersion Test
Another, more direct test of waterproofing is the submersion test. To perform the submersion test, fill the inside of your boots with water and wait 15-20 minutes. If at that point the outer surface of the boot doesn’t show any wet spots or signs of leaks, the boots are properly sealed and likely to be fully waterproof.
Keep in mind, however, that while the submersion test is an excellent indicator of waterproofing, it can potentially damage boots that are not properly waterproofed. Proceed with caution.
In the outdoors, your boots play a pivotal role in safeguarding your feet from the elements. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, work outdoors, or are simply navigating a wet urban environment, it's crucial to be well-informed about the materials and features that make up a high quality pair of waterproof boots. Choose the right pair and you’ll stride out confidently in any conditions, secure in the knowledge that your feet will remain dry, warm, and comfortable.

As the days get shorter and winter takes the reins from autumn, some of us in colder climates face the decades old question – “Do I need to get new snow boots?” Or are they called “winter boots?” If you’ve asked yourself this question before, don’t worry, you’re not alone. We’re going to set the record straight so you can keep your feet & toes warm all season long.
Should you opt for snow boots or winter boots? Do you actually know the difference between the two? Which is best suited to your region? Whatever your choice, what materials and cutting-edge features should you be looking for? What’s the correct balance between practicality, warmth, weather-readiness, and aesthetics?
It can be an overwhelming decision, especially with cold, dark days looming ahead of you. We don’t want you to add to your stress, so we’ve put together this guide to explain the difference between snow boots and winter boots, how they differ, and what to consider as you make your next frosty footwear choice.
Winter boots are your feet’s most powerful defense against the wet, wind, and chill of a brutal winter. Winter boots serve two primary purposes: keeping their wearer’s feet warm and dry, and providing them with traction as they navigate snow, ice, and slush. These seasonal essentials come in a wide range of styles, each tailored to a specific environment and winter conditions.
Several factors go into the design of a winter boot. There are the materials from which it’s made, which can range from rugged leather to waterproof synthetic fabric, depending on your preference and needs. Then there are also questions of style, like height and color.
Despite the potential differences, all winter boots have one central purpose: to keep your feet warm while providing traction on slippery terrain.
The most important factor to consider when shopping around for winter boots is insulation. This often means advanced materials like Thinsulate or PrimaLoft. Each of these act as a thermal barrier between your feet and the frigid elements.
Another vital feature is water resistance. High-quality boots are designed with specialized membranes or coatings that keep water out and your feet dry, all while offering enough breathability to wick foot sweat.
Finally, there's the question of comfort. If your feet are warm & dry but in extreme pain because your boots are too tight or lack support, the insulation won’t matter all that much. Make sure you select boots that have padded insoles, cushioned midsoles, and ergonomic designs tailored to your particular environment (urban vs. rural, for instance). At Royal Canadian, all of our boots are made with Merino wool memory foam insoles that offer ample arch & heel support as you trek through deep snow & across icy terrain.
Snow boots are the workhorses of winter footwear. Crafted specifically for regions with constant slush and deep snow, these boots insulate and shield your feet from moisture while conquering the trials of snowy landscapes. There are subtle differences between winter & snow boots; let’s examine those further.
Snow boots are designed to combat the cold and wet, just like winter boots. Their high shafts provide added insulation to the lower leg and prevent snow from seeping in near your shins. High-quality snow boots also boast waterproofing technology. This is often through a specialized membrane like Gore-Tex, which fends off issues like frostbite and trench foot, ensuring that your feet remain dry & cozy in even the coldest and dampest conditions.
As important as insulation is to winter boots, it’s downright vital to snow boots. Designers choose insulation materials based on how warm they need the boots to be, how well they resist water, and where people will wear the boots. For example, someone who lives in the Yukon Territory needs a more advanced temperature rating than a person in Toronto. Royal Canadian boots have a -30°C (-22°F) cold-rated thermal insulation, built for the harshest blizzards and coldest temperatures.
Underfoot, the soles are engineered with a dual grip outsole to provide traction on slippery surfaces, as well as deep, knee-high snow. Combined with higher ankle shafts and waterproofing materials, these snow boots are a pair you can depend on when you need it most.
But even with all of that functionality, there’s still plenty of room for style in many snow boots. Whether you’re looking for snow boots to work outside or to cruise around the ski lodge for Après-ski, you should look for a pair that can easily do both. Whatever you choose, make sure that the leather & synthetic materials can handle the daily wear & tear of long, harsh winters and sudden, extreme blizzards.
Remember, a “winter wonderland” is only fun when your feet are warm, dry, and comfy.
The sole purpose of winter boots & snow boots is to keep your feet warm & dry throughout the winter, even as temperatures drop and snowfall increases. And even though the terms are used interchangeably, there are a few key differences between the two.
Winter boots thrive in urban settings and casual outdoor activities. All winter boots models prioritize insulation and breathability. However, unlike heavier-duty snow boots, most winter boots’ secondary priority is aesthetics. As a result, winter boots are ideal for moderate cold and wet conditions.
Snow boots, on the other hand, are engineered first and foremost to withstand deep snow, slush, and icy terrain. Their high shafts prevent snow from seeping into the boot. Meanwhile, advanced insulation and waterproofing keep the wearer’s feet warm and dry. If you spend a lot of time in rural, mountainous areas, snow boots are the preferred option to protect you from frostbite and trench foot.
Winter boots combine style & functionality that’s suitable for a variety of occasions. Meanwhile, snow boots' sole aim is to provide specialized protection in the harshest, wettest conditions. Both are well-suited for their stated purposes. Choosing between the two ultimately comes down to your needs. For some, the priority is fashion and versatility – winter boots. For others, style takes a back seat to high-level performance and functionality – snow boots.
Ultimately, the choice is yours; you know your needs & fashion sense the best.
Tailor your selection to local weather conditions. Consider temperature ratings, which offer valuable insights into the range of temperatures that a boot can withstand. In regions with heavy snowfall, fully waterproof snow boots with deep treads and ample insulation are the way to go. In milder climates, more stylish and versatile winter boots are sufficient.
Beyond this, take into account your daily routine. Are you hiking on mountain sides or regularly working outside in deep snow? Or are you navigating slushy sidewalks on your daily commute to work? These considerations will help you decide on activity-specific features like waterproofing, reinforced soles, or enhanced traction.
Even with all this knowledge, you should try on a pair of boots before committing to them to make sure they fit properly. Make sure the boots fit snugly but do not constrict blood flow to your feet. Also, keep in mind that feet can swell in the cold, especially if you have poor circulation. Take this, and the room you’d need for thicker (or multiple pairs of) socks into account when trying on a pair in a comfortable temperature. This will save you from a great deal of discomfort.
At Royal Canadian Boots, every pair of winter and snow boots is born of a commitment to excellence. This focus on cutting-edge technology, functionality, and fashion goes into every pair of boots we make, ensuring your triumph over the elements in style and comfort.
